The little town of Siem Reap is situated only
seven kilometeres from Angkor complex. It was here that the explorers
put their expeditions to the ruins together, in colonial times
more than 100 years ago. Still today it's the departure point
for visits. One can find hotels in all categories and to fit all
pockets. Without losing its calm and tranquility, Siem Reap has,
for some time, undergone a veritable mutation. What was originaly
a grouping of small villages has inexorably become a real town,
where the first traffic light appeared in 2002.
Despite all, the place is very easy going. Tree-lined avenues,
old French colonial buildings and the river running through give
Siem Reap a very relaxed feel in contrast to the hustle and bustle
of Phnom Penh. Security is not generally a problem but don't carry
too much cash with you and keep your luggage locked in your hotel
room.
